If you are thinking of removing your mercury (also known as ‘amalgam’) fillings, there are 5 things you need to know. Below, you will learn about a holistic approach to removing and replacing mercury (amalgam) fillings as well as the SMART removal method for ensuring that it’s done safely. But before we get to that, let’s briefly address the massive amounts of information, opinions, and regulations that surround this controversial topic.
Most dentists are conflicted when it comes to removing mercury fillings. The challenging and debatable reasons for this are beyond the scope of this article. And these issues aside, when my patients ask to have their mercury fillings removed, my main goal is to provide holistic dentistry that helps my patient achieve the level of health they choose and deserve, and do so safely and beautifully. This is why, after a thorough exam and consultation, our office follows the 5 guidelines below, and works with each patient individually, in order to reach their optimum health goals in a way that works specifically for them.
1. SMART removal of mercury fillings
The Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) is well known as the highest level of safety protocols for removal of mercury fillings. We have implemented this method into our practice many years ago, in order to provide safe and healthy dentistry to our patients and stay true to our values of constantly learning and improving.
2. Bio-compatible materials
Using BPA-free and high quality dental materials is one of the cornerstones of holistic dentistry. As new materials enter the market, we are always on the lookout for those that meet Dr. Bis’ high expectations and bio-compatibility measures. Since dental materials are a broad area of discussion, if you have specific concerns or requests, Dr. Bis will go over these with you at your consultation so bring your questions (and compatibility results if you had this done) to your appointment.
3. What hides behind amalgam fillings
One of the most controversial topics of discussion among different dentists is the question of When do we, as dentists, recommend the removal of mercury fillings? What our patients often don’t realize is that the answer to this question will actually vary greatly from one dentist to another. This is a very subjective area. Some will wait for visible signs (so large decay that one can see with your own eyes), others wait for x-rays to show evidence of decay (you may be waiting a long time), and others often wait till it’s too late and a large piece of tooth breaks off, before recommending to remove the amalgam filling.
But removing a mercury filling should be done at the first signs of any issues, or when the patient requests it. Our office can discuss all options with you at your consultation, and Dr. Bis uses highly specialized digital technology to help diagnosis and early detection of numerous concerns, including fractures, early decay, leakage, bacteria presence, crack penetration, and infection.
4. Connection to your body
Since the mouth is connected to the rest of you, it is important to understand your particular current health situation and concerns, as well as your ultimate goals for what you want to achieve on your health journey. This can be as simple as a request to avoid fluoride, for example, and as complex as a multi-faceted sensitivity and medical challenges tied together. If you have concerns or issues that are complex or require a thorough discussion, please let us know when you schedule your appointment so we can allow additional time for Dr. Bis to spend with you in order to ensure all your questions are answered.
5. Cosmetic Dentistry is Holistic Dentistry
Many patients who would like to improve their smile are hesitant due to the impact it may have on their body. A dentist who understands the holistic side of dentistry, as well as individual patient needs, will work with you to choose a material that is right for you. A beautiful or improved smile can be achieved with bio-compatible materials and give you the smile you have always wanted, in a healthy and holistic way.
