If you suffer from migraines, jaw pain, and other Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) symptoms, you are probably excited to learn that you can get permanent relief from your debilitating pain. There is a TMJ dental appliance, also called a Fixed or Removable Orthotic, that can provide relief and healing from symptoms related to TMJ (also known as TMD – Temporomandibular Disorder).
A fixed (meaning you don’t remove it and you wear it 24/7) or a removable orthotic is an anatomical dental appliance that is used in neuromuscular dentistry to diagnose and treat TMD issues. This appliance, when worn, allows for a balanced muscle system and relief from TMJ pain and symptoms. Your neuromuscular dentist, after discussing which one is best for you, will provide you with this orthotic, which will be used to first establish the most comfortable jaw and bite position for you that helps you resolve your symptoms, then use that new orthotic to provide you with a long-term solution.
The final resolution of TMD symptoms can involve many different treatments. Some of the most common are:
- Bite adjustment
- Long-term orthotic wear
- Orthodontics (braces or aligners)
- Porcelain restorations
Your particular situation may involve one or many options and it will be up to you and your neuromuscular dentist to discuss the one that is best for you.
The orthotic has been successfully used in our office for many years. We’ve diagnosed, and treated many pain patients who were not able to get relief elsewhere. We often get referrals from doctors and specialists in our area, especially when patients have tried multiple attempts at treating their pain with no resolution. If you suffer from TMJ or facial pain including migraines, contact us to schedule a consultation to find out if a solution exists for your particular issue.
