A first visit to a new dental office raises practical questions. Will there be X-rays? Will someone explain what they find, and what it costs? This is what happens at a first visit to our Oakville office.
Before you arrive
When you book, we ask for your contact details and your dental insurance information, if you have coverage. Please bring:
- A list of the medications and supplements you take
- Your insurance card
- Recent X-rays from your previous dentist, or that office’s contact information so we can request them
Previous X-rays are useful. They show changes over time, and they can reduce the number of new X-rays you need.
Your health history
We start with your medical and dental history. Medical conditions, medications and past treatment affect what is safe and what is recommended. We also ask what brought you in: a specific problem, a long gap since your last visit, or a move to a new office.
The examination
Dr. Bis examines your teeth, gums, existing fillings and crowns, the soft tissues of the mouth, and your bite. The exam includes an oral cancer screening and a check of the jaw joints and chewing muscles. Jaw problems often go unnoticed until they cause pain, so we check them at every new patient exam.
Gum health is measured, not estimated. We measure the space between each tooth and the gum. These measurements show if the gums are healthy or if the bone that supports the teeth is being lost.
X-rays
X-rays show decay between the teeth, infection at the root tips, and bone levels that cannot be seen in the mouth. We take only the X-rays your situation requires. If your previous dentist sends recent images, we use them.
Cleaning
A cleaning is sometimes done at the first visit, and sometimes booked as a separate appointment. That depends on what the exam finds and how much time is needed to discuss treatment, if treatment is needed.
Your results and your plan
Before you leave, Dr. Bis explains what she found. If treatment is needed, you will know what it is, why it is recommended, which items are urgent and which can wait, and the estimated cost. You decide what to do and when.
The same people at every visit
Our office is owned and run by Dr. Agatha Bis, who has practised in Oakville for over 30 years. You see the same dentist at each visit, and the same team answers the phone when you call.
