One in eight North Americans suffer from chronic headaches that are so severe they cannot carry on normal functions.
“Painful”, “debilitating”, “long-lasting”, “irritating” – some of the words used to describe how migraines feel to our patients.
Migraines are recurrent, throbbing headaches that usually affect only one side of the head. Migraines can often be accompanied by nausea or vomiting.
If you are a migraine sufferer, you already know how they can negatively affect your life.
We are here to help you with many solutions that will help keep you pain free for years to come.
What Are Some Causes of Migraines
There are many causes of migraines that may be linked to your teeth and surrounding structures.
One of the causes of migraines can be from a poor bite, leading to tension migraines.
Tension migraines can results from muscle strain or fatigue, due to the muscles being used poorly for long periods of time. These migraines can be caused by a poor bite or by clenching/grinding your teeth.
Migraines can also be caused by overexerting your muscles during swallowing. We swallow over 2000 times per day and night, so if your bite is unstable, if you have poorly aligned teeth or are missing teeth, your muscles have to work harder to move your jaw, your tongue, and to hold your head up.
Along with tension, migraines can also be caused by referred pain due to dental or facial trauma.
If you are unsure of the cause, we are happy to help you find the cause so we can help you with a solution.

Treating Your Migraines
If you have tried time and time again to get rid of your painful migraines with no success, it may be time to start looking at your bite.
By using neuromuscular dentistry techniques, we can help you assess your bite and correct any discrepancies.
This may mean adjusting the bite in some areas, while ‘building-up’ your bite in others – all in hopes of finding an equilibrium to soothe and/or completely eliminate your migraines.
For more immediate pain relief until a solution can be found, we also offer Botox therapy.
Botox therapy works by relaxing the muscles that are causing the migraines, thus relieving the tension.
Most of the time, Botox therapy needs to be completed at least every 3 months to see continued pain relief.
