Snoring or mouth breathing
How to check: Watch your child while they sleep. Do they regularly snore or sleep with their mouth open? Do they often breathe through their mouth during the day?
Why we check: These can be signs that we should take a closer look at their airway and development.
Jaw clicking or popping
How to check: Ask your child to slowly open and close their mouth a few times. Listen or ask if they feel a click or pop.
Why we check: Clicking or difficulty opening can be a sign that the jaw joint needs closer assessment.
Crowded teeth
How to check: Ask your child to give you a big smile. Are any teeth overlapping, twisted or coming in without enough room?
Why we check: Crowding can give us clues about the space available as their teeth and jaws develop.
Midlines don’t match
How to check: With their teeth gently together, look at the line between the two upper front teeth and the line between the two lower front teeth. Do they line up?
Why we check: An off-centre midline is one of the bite and jaw-development signs we screen.
Crossbite or open bite
How to check: Ask them to gently bite their teeth together. Do some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth? Or is there a space between the front teeth even when they're biting?
Why we check: These bite patterns are important to notice while your child is still growing.
