Top 5 “Creepy” Things In Your Mouth

Let’s face it – the human mouth is creepy. There are many things in the mouth that seem abnormal. For the most part, even the weirdest parts of the mouth are completely normal.

Here are a few of the strangest things that can be found in a human mouth:

Palatine Rugae

Have you ever run your tongue along the roof of your mouth and felt roughness or bumps? This is likely a completely normal anatomical finding called palatine rugae. The reason for its existence is still relatively unknown.

Tori

Speaking of weird bumps, how about this freaky-looking extra bone? Torus (one) or tori (more than one) are extra bits of bone that can grow underneath your tongue or on the roof of your mouth. While this may look like a disease, tori are completely normal. They can range from extremely small bumps to extremely large bumps, which can impact chewing, speaking and swallowing.

Tonsil Stones

Over 70% of our population has reported getting these foul-smelling, yellow/green chunks in the mouth. Tonsil stones are caused when food and bacteria get lodged in the nooks and crannies of the tonsils. If kept there long enough, it starts to calcify and hardens into what we all know as tonsil stones. Frequent tonsil stones? Try gargling with salt water.

Cold Sores

Herpes simplex virus affects approximately 75% of the population. Brought on by stress, acidic foods, weather or hormones, these pimple-like sores can last anywhere from 8-12 days. While there is no cure for herpes simplex virus, there are over-the -counter remedies that help with the healing process.

Sloughing

This stringy, white, web-like material can line the gums and tongue as a reaction to toothpaste, mouthwash or acidic foods. While generally harmless, if bothersome, try switching brands of toothpaste or mouthwash, or avoid foods and beverages that cause it. Many people complain about whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes as the primary cause of the film.
